Wonder how to find the motivation to stay motivated when changing careers or starting your own business?
In this video you’ll discover why relying on motivation is unsustainable and what to focus on instead – Get ready to feel fired up!
How do you stay motivated when you’re changing careers, or you’re starting your own business?
How do you keep going when you don’t feel like it?
Keep reading/watching to find out!
If you’ve been wanting to change careers or start your own business for a while, then I’m sure you know that getting started is rarely the problem.
The real issue is to figure out how to stay motivated and to keep going until you get the result you want.
But sadly, what happens in most cases is that people start, stop, start, stop, start, stop and never get any momentum.
They get into this start/stop cycle and never actually end up making any progress.
Can you relate to the “Start/Stop Cycle”?
Then keep watching!
Or maybe you are in the “one-off 6-hour marathon research day, then nothing for 3 weeks” category?…
…Where you do a monster marathon session of six hours one Saturday, really researching everything about your career change, but then for the next three weeks, you do nothing whatsoever…
…Which means that you end up feeling like you’re back to square one, and you doubt yourself even more than you did before. You feel the opposite of motivated!
If you can relate to any of those scenarios, then let me share two areas with you in this video that are absolutely going to change how you approach your career change process, so you can keep going and get the results you want.
If you’re an aspiring career changer, an aspiring entrepreneur and a smart person in your 30s or 40s, make sure you subscribe to this channel.
My name is Rikke Hansen, and in case we haven’t met before, since 2005 I’ve run a career change consultancy, where privately I’ve advised 100s of clients all over the world and through online courses and talks and videos like this, I’ve reached thousands of people just like you.
Everything I’m sharing in these videos is stuff that works, so if you want more advice like that, make sure you subscribe.
Now back to you. Here’s the deal. If you are asking me: “Rikke, how do I stay motivated?” – What you’re really asking me is:
“Rikke, how do I make myself do things even when I don’t feel like it?”
That Thursday night when you’re really tired, and you’re coming back from a full-time job, how do you find the motivation to keep going and doing those things you know you need to do in order to make your career change a reality?
That’s what I want to talk to you about, because let’s face it, human nature is what you’re up against.
We are hard wired to avoid pain, seek pleasure, and just keep the status quo. But the thing is, your dreams are over on the other side of that comfort zone.
Let’s talk about what I can tell you actually works.
There are two areas here to focus on:
#1 Consistency (the most important one)
Consistency means that you do something again and again and again until you get the result you want.
It’s the only antidote to the start, stop, start, stop cycle.
It’s truly the thing that will make you keep going again and again.
So the first thing you want to change is that it’s not enough to just do a marathon session once in a while, you want to look at what can you consistently do week after week until you get the result you want.
What can YOU do consistently week after week until you get the result you want?
Habits are super important because it’s a very concrete tool you can insert into your already busy week to start changing your life – Week after week – With a clear agenda.
When it’s Tuesday night or Thursday night or Saturday morning – Or whenever you choose to insert these habits + Match it with a name – You’ll know exactly what you are going to be doing.
No need to second guess yourself or spend half an hour deciding what to do – The habit sets the agenda.
Habits are really the magical ingredient because you keep doing it over and over again until you get the result that you want.
These things are so important, the consistency and the habits, that every time I work with people, whether it’s inside my online programmes, or whether it’s my one-on-one clients, it’s one of the first things we look at.
Where are you not consistent? Where can you get consistent?
Where do we insert habits, on a weekly, daily, or monthly basis, so that we can make sure you do the few things that need to happen consistently in order to make that transition a reality.
In this video is I’ll just give you a glimpse in to what it might look in your case.
Let’s look at your life so we can start getting really practical, and you can start applying some of this straightaway.
How this applies to YOUR life
Let’s say I met you on a Sunday night and I asked you to show me your calendar, as in what specific time slots have you already booked out next week for your career change or your first business.
What specifically is going to be the focus for those individual time slots?
If I were to ask YOU about this – What have you already got planned?
Have you got anything specific that you’re focusing on right now?
Because here is the deal, unless you are consistent and insert specific habits like this into your existing life, your transition will not happen.
You take them and you insert them into your life to start creating more of what you want and less of what you don’t want.
A real-life Example
Let’s say you’re someone who would love to start your own business.
What I would expect to see in your calendar would be let’s say at Tuesday at 6:30pm you’ve got a research slot for let’s say an hour and a half, where you research a specific idea.
Tuesday 6.30pm = Research Routine
Thursday at 7pm it’s your networking evening, or as I like to call it, make friends in the area you love.
Thursday 7pm = Network Routine
A word on networking…
I know a lot of people hate networking, so I always think of it as making friends.
You’re changing careers or starting your own business because you want to move into a field you love, with people that you love – So it’s really about making friends.
I would expect to see a networking slot in your calendar – Let’s say Thursday consistently.
Saturday 9am = Marketing Routine
Let’s say this week you’re doing Facebook ads to advertise the popup you’re doing for your new business.
That’s just an example of one week.
Consistent Time Slot + Routine Name In Your Calendar
But you see what we’re doing here is we’ve got a specific time slot i.e., every Tuesday night and it has a name attached to it like it’s your research routine, so come Tuesday 7pm you don’t have to second-guess what you’re doing.
You are not going to have worry about whether you feel like it or not.
You just know it’s Tuesday and it’s your Research Routine.
So you get your butt on the seat and you research.
Come Thursday, you’ll get yourself in the mindset of “this is when I’m going out to make friends” – I.e. Networking.
So when Thursday rolls around, you have something that works, and the same thing with Saturday, it’s your marketing slot.
Over to you
What do you need to find out over the next month?
What is one of the most important things you want to nail down, whether it’s deciding what career you want, deciding what business you want, marketing it, researching it.
What Habits / Routines do you need to insert into your calendar – Up front?
I would expect to see things at least two to three times a week if you want to make real progress, even if it’s just something like 25 minutes, three times a week, whatever it is, it is so much better that you do three times a week every week, than a monster session once a month.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY.
So think about when can you slot things into your calendar i.e., the consistency – Do it week after week.
NAME YOUR ROUTINES
With regards to routines. How can you name them? As time goes on, so they reflect exactly what you’re going to be doing during that time you’re doing it.
What’s so magical about routines and consistency is that you insert them into your calendar so you can slowly create more of what you really want and slowly get rid of what you no longer want.
So that every week you get to Tuesday 6:30, you know that’s your research slot.
And whether you feel like it or not, you can just start doing it.
It’s already been decided up front that you’re spending the time on it.
Can you imagine for a moment with me, if for the next just one month you stick to a schedule like this, how much more clarity and focus you’ll have?!
That’s what’s so important.
For most people, their career change, their business ideas, never get further than their own head and sporadic efforts.
But if you apply these two strategies and implement them consistently, then you will make your career change or your transition into your own business inevitable.
I see this again and again.
Another Tool: Morning Routines
Now, these are just some of the evening routines.
,What’s equally important is morning routines, but we don’t have time to talk about that right now. I’ve already been going for a while.
Personally, Morning Routines are my favourite – Because what gets done in the morning gets done!
Make sure you watch that video as well and see which approach might be most suitable for you.
What matters most is the consistency and that you name that routine and that habits and know exactly what you’re going to be doing.
If you know you don’t want to get to the end of another year and still be in that job scenario you’ve totally outgrown (…that job you hate), then come over to Rikke.me/options
That’s where I personally can help you really get clear on what it is you want to do next and identify the habits and consistencies you need to include into your life to make your career change inevitable.
